Compassion Fatigue

image
Standard

Are you in a helping profession or a care giver?

Have you heard of the term Compassion Fatigue ?

Let’s take a good look at what Compassion Fatigue looks like and some options and resources if you are dealing with compassion Fatique.

As a mental health professional and living with a chronic health condition. I have been researching Compassion Fatique and the correlation between the two.

image

In the early 1990s, Compassion Fatique was first seen in the nursing and health care profession. It was not until many years later that it was looked at in other helping professionals.

Below are some key areas to be focused on when looking to gain better insight into Compassion Fatigue.

Commom Symptoms

1. Anger and irritability

2. Insomnia

3. Low energy

4. Isolation from others

5. Changes in Appetite

6. Frequent Flashbacks

7. Lack of Motivation

8. Guilty Feelings

9. Sadness or Depressive Symptoms

10. Lack of ability to focus/ Concentration

11. Somatic complaints ( stomach aches, headaches)

12. Poor coping

13 .Anxiety ( excessive worry )

14. Feeling Hopeless

15. Unproductive at work

16 . Issues with interpersonal relationships

Although the symptoms are very symptoms to the common mental health diagnosis, Compassion Fatique is not mental illiness.

If you have any of the symptoms above and having difficulty coping feel free to reach out for additional support from a professional or your primary care physician.

Find positive and healthy outlets.

Self Care -How do you define Selfcare?

image
Standard

Self Care is any intentional plan to take care of your own personal needs(Self).

The question today is how do you define self care? Many things in life are viewed differently based on the interpretation of the individual.

image

According to some it’s is defined

as “to treat yourself”.

According to the World Health Organization(The WHO)

“Self care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health and to prevent and deal with illness ”

Other definitions refer to self care as activities done to enhance health, prevent disease, limit illness and restore overall health .

A simple definition of self care is doing what is necessary to take care of you.

Many of us have multiple roles and duties and we find the attention being off of taking care of ourselves which in turn leads to health issues that causes us to stop.  Therefore it is vital that we set aside time to take care of our selves.

Some points to keep in mind:

  1. Have a creative outlet
  2. Schedule “MeTime”
  3.  Learn to say “No”
  4. Have Balance between work , family & self.
  5. Accept that it is okay to slow down
  6. Learn to Laugh
  7. Refame Failure
  8. Keep and Attitude of Gratitude
  9. Maintian your Spirtual Wellbeing ( prayer and reflection)
  10. Avoid negativity

VitaminD: The Sunshine Vitamin

image
Standard

Did you know that are body make 90% of its own Vitamin D?

image

Well I guess , I am part of the 10%  that does not produce its own Vitamin D as I was told that I was Vitamin D deficient.

So I am on the quest to not have to take any more pills. So I am learning more natural ways to heal my body and get what I need to live a healthier lifestyle.

I have been on a 30 Day Challenge to see if there will be any difference in how I feel with making some changes in my life that include getting up and moving with gym visits, increasing my Vitamin D intake ( which is the primary focus of this post) and drinking more water.

So you are Vitamin D deficient….What do you do now ? Education is the key, in my opinion.

Vitamin D is also known as the Sunshine Vitamin and can be produced with mild exposure or consumed in food or supplements.

Make sure you “Enjoy your Day ” Get out and get some  “Sunshine”

Research shows that 5-10 minutes outside 2-3x per week allows the body to produce sufficient VitaminD, but only has a half life of two weeks. So it’s  necessary to be consistent in order not to be VitaminD deficient…

Vitamin Day has many roles that included the following:

  1. Maintain health of bones & teeth
  2. Support the health of the immune system and nervous system
  3. Regulate insulin levels
  4. Support lung function
  5. Vitamin D is important for the regulation of calcium
